Slipper Island

Slipper Island (Whakahau) is one of the few privately owned islands in New Zealand that welcomes the public. Located just 3km off the Coromandel Peninsula, it offers a distinct "off-grid" lifestyle. The island is a blend of working farmland and high-protection marine areas, featuring safe, sheltered swimming beaches on the western side and rugged volcanic cliffs to the east. In 2026, it remains a favorite for "active relaxers"—those who want to spend their days hiking to the solar-powered lighthouse, snorkeling shipwrecks, or kayaking in crystal-clear bays.

Accommodations & Design The design is "Kiwi Bach" meets "Modern Glamping." The chalets are functional and cozy, featuring timber interiors and expansive decks with lidded BBQs. The Safari and Glamping Tents are the highlight for those seeking a closer connection to nature, built on raised platforms with proper beds, internal bathrooms, and kitchenette facilities. The aesthetic is intentionally unpretentious; there is no air conditioning or high-speed Wi-Fi in the rooms, encouraging guests to swap screen time for sunset views over the Coromandel ranges.

Amenities & Inclusions Slipper Island’s amenities focus on the great outdoors and self-sufficiency.

Marine Life: The island sits within a High Protection Area. Guests have complimentary use of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. The S.S. Manaia shipwreck (sunk in 1926) is a popular nearby spot for divers and snorkelers.

Hiking: Multiple trails crisscross the 224 hectares, leading to the island’s highest point (103m) and the eastern lighthouse for 360-degree views of the Alderman Islands.

Gastronomy: There are zero shops or restaurants on the island. Each unit is equipped with a fridge, stove/microwave, and BBQ. Fresh water is sourced on-island, but guests are advised to bring their preferred beverages.

Sustainability: The resort is solar-powered with backup generators, emphasizing a low-impact footprint on the sensitive coastal environment.

How Private Is This Island? Privacy at Slipper Island is expansive and rugged. While it is not a "one-group-only" island (unless you book a full buyout), the sheer size—over 500 acres for just 30-odd guests—means you can easily find a beach or a ridgeline all to yourself. There are no public roads or vehicles, only walking tracks. Day-trippers are allowed to visit the beaches, but they usually depart by late afternoon, leaving the overnight guests with a profound sense of sovereignty over one of New Zealand’s most beautiful coastal secrets.
